Hockey Arbitration Competition of Canada @ U of T, October 24-25
SEALS President Patrick Bobyn and Director of Communications Lucy Yuan represented UBC at the 3rd Annual Hockey Arbitration Competition of Canada. The event took place at the University of Toronto campus from October 24 to 25. 32 teams from across Canada and the eastern United States filed their briefs earlier in the month, then convened in Toronto to make their oral arguments in a mock salary arbitration hearing in front of a guest arbitrator. This third-party arbitrator was someone with years of experience in the National Hockey League or as a player agent.
Team UBC competed in three preliminary rounds on the 24th, representing the Club in the matter of Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Cody Franson and Montreal Canadiens forward Lars Eller, and representing the Player in the case of New York Rangers forward Derick Brassard. Our arbitrators were, respectively, certified NHL player agent Craig Oster, senior counsel for the NHL Daniel Ages, and President of MFIVE Sports Anton Thun. On the 25th, the final round played out in front of a packed audience, with guest arbitrators Cliff Hart, Don Meehan, and Brian Burke. This was followed by a panel of sports industry experts, discussing a range of topics including league expansion, fighting in hockey, and the growing prevalence of advanced statistics in hockey analysis. The weekend ended with an after party at the Shark Club Sports Bar in downtown Toronto, where all the remaining attendees mingled while watching that evening’s NHL games.
All in all, it was an illuminating and very rewarding weekend, and Team UBC is appreciative of the opportunity to attend. Thank you to the University of Toronto Sports and Entertainment Law Society for putting on a great event, and thank you to the Curtis Fund at UBC for helping subsidize the costs of attendance.
The Future of Creativity: Ideas for the Digital Age
This past Thursday, the first in a series of talks entitled “Future of Creativity: Ideas for Digital Age” took place at UBC Robson Square. The series is being presented by the Artists’ Legal Outreach (ALO) and Books On the Radio and has been generously funded by Creative BC and UBC Continuing Studies.
The topic of Thursday’s talk was acclaimed author Astra Taylor‘s latest offering: “The People’s Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture In The Digital Age”. The evening began with a thought provoking presentation by Astra Taylor outlining some of the main themes of her latest work and was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Martha Rans, legal director of ALO. The panelists included a plethora of new media thinkers from Canada and the Unites States:
-
Brett Gaylor is a Canadian documentary filmmaker whose latest work explores the changing concept of copyright (RiP!: A Remix Manifesto).
-
Amber Frid Jimenez is an artist and professor at Emily Carr whose recent work explores the role of design and technology in cultural mechanics.
-
Maggie Vail is co-founder of cashmusic.org (Coalition for Artists and Stakeholders), a non-profit Portland based organization that takes an open source approach to music production and distribution.
-
Brian Wideen is the founder and COO of Cinecoup, a company that uses a disruptive model for indie filmmakers to develop market and finance their feature films (Check out Wolf Cop for an example of their work).
